It has been a year?! Ludum Dare 38 game jam happened, and this time we worked with Unity 3D.
I was able to dust off my rigging & animation skills and deliver these cute bugs and robot through Maya.

12/9/2013The Prototype is In!
Its turret is fully articulated to rotate and pivot the gun. Though a missed shaved corner and little room in the turret cabin caused the gun to be unable to aim upward. One of the few revisions that would have to be made.
The most complex of parts, the tracks, worried me the most in design. So many small details and the teeth for the drive wheel were all questionable factors on the final production. Yet the detail held, and looks incredible!
The track assembly worked near-perfectly! The holes for placing the magnets were only slightly bit shallow but fixable (used drill-bit to deepen holes for magnets). And after they were pieced together, they only wobbled very slightly, a problem that can be solved by allowing a third, center magnet slot set to stablize the tracks.
Overall an exciting outcome in the design and only very few changes needing to be made.
Hope everyone enjoys this as much as I! Til next time.

Falcon Knight Design
"Falconing is cool!", these were my thoughts. To create a falconer in Shovel Knight was really neat. I thought of this large falcon as the knight's main course of attacks at his command. The cape is everything to this design. Leather cape styled as wings, but not totally symmetrical. The cape was made larger on one side compared to the other so that the large glove can hold the falcon. For the armor, I went with a great helm and a more standard gothic breastplate. Added wing design to the skirts. Then finally the colors. I wanted the feel of leather, so the browns stayed and then worked with various ideas for the metals tired to keep near browns which lead to the yellow. I compared the armor colors with all other knights and not tried to clash or overlap use of color (did the same for Seige Knight). The green leaf hilted blade felt natural after testing various colors and so the colors stayed.
Siege Knight Design
Cannons involved in sieges came to mind so the name came naturally. Siege Knight was the Gutsman idea you can say, big and destructive, but with cannons! The design had to be focused on the cannon and how he would use it. I felt he had to be fairly big to move with a cannon with ease, to hold it the way he does. Then, after I figured the cannon, his helmet and his size, I thought of the silhouette; those giant cannonball shaped pualdrons. Last thing was then the thought "How does he just keep firing cannonballs?". Then the barrel on his back was drawn for comedic effect, him just carrying all that weight amuses me. Siege Knight, I imagined his stage be anything from a besieged castle, through a warring field and to a giant war machine.
Shovel Knight is looking great and I am excited for its release. Hope all of you will enjoy it too!
Til next time.
